Once again Cyprus participated in the Small Federations Games held in Monte Carlo between  21th -23th November 2017.

Our National Team consisted of Philippos Frangos (playing Captain), Frosso Tillyris, George Kolettis and George Georgiades. The team was accompanied by the Greek Christina Syrakopoulou who coached the team during the past two months.

Three members of the Federation, Aleka Astreou, Errikos Leonidou and Carol Anderson went along on their own expense. Thus the team had great support in its efforts to represent Cyprus well.

Fifteen countries participated in the games. A Full Round Robin of ten boards per match with a bye for every team was played.

On the first day, Cyprus lost to San Marino and Georgia, beat Luxemburg and Monaco and almost drew with the strong Estonian team. This put Cyprus in tenth place at the end of the day.

The following day, the team had a bye first match followed by the second match on Vugraph against second-ranking Ukraine. After a good performance by both pairs (Philippos Frangos made an incredible 3NT congratulated by everybody) the team won the match 12.51 - 7.49 vps.

The team was on a roll beating Guernsey, Croatia and Czech Republic. At the end of the second day, Cyprus ranked fourth having earned the respect of all teams. Had the initial plan been followed-i.e. a Full Round Robin the first two days and a semi-final and final among first four on the third day-Cyprus would have played in the semi-final. It is the first time ever that Cyprus had reached such a respectable position in the Small Feds. Everybody was in good spirits as on the final day three of the five matches were against weak teams.

First match of third and last day, the team was told that they were going to be on Vugraph against second-ranking Lithuania. Unfortunately our team lost and this was followed by losses to weak Malta and the EBL Emeritus President, beating only Slovakia and almost drawing with Lebanon.
Thus Cyprus finished ninth, not a bad position but very disappointing after the good performance against most of the strong teams.

Coach Christina Syrakopoulou was very impressed with the high team spirit and the huge supportiveness of the players as well as of the group accompanying them.

It is a fact that our small island does not offer strong competition at the bridge table. Nevertheless,  huge progress has been made with the help of the coach and a lot of hard work by the National Team players.

President Aubry, seeing Cyprus ranking fourth at the end of the second day, commented: “The way you are going, you will win this”.

We all hope that one day Cyprus WILL win the games. The seeds are there.
